News

This week we got some exciting news: the Modern Mandolin Quartet received a Grammy nomination!  Our newest release on Sono Luminus Records, “Americana,” has been Grammy nominated for the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.  The CD also received Grammy nominations for Best Engineered Classical Album (for engineer Daniel Shores) and Classical Producer of the Year (for our producers, Marina and Victor Ledin, who also produced five other classical CDs in the past year).

The CD features music by Copland, Gershwin, Dvorak, Bernstein, Bill Monroe and Philip Glass; classical, modern and roots musics all with an American sound.  The quartet (Dana Rath and Matt Flinner, mandolins; Paul Binkley, mandola and Adam Roszkiewicz, mandocello) recorded at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA.  And it's the only mandolin CD we're aware of that was recorded in surround sound (the CD package comes with an extra Blu-Ray disc that lets you experience the joy of being surrounded by mandolins).  To order a copy, visit the "Americana" page.  Also, look for MMQ tour dates coming in Spring 2013 and beyond.

New instruction books are available to help you in your explorations of bluegrass and/or the mandolin.   The All-Star Jam Along Book & CD for Mandolin includes mandolin solos and detailed transcriptions by Matt Flinner for 21 bluegrass standards, and the Real Bluegrass Book from Hal Leonard Publishing includes over 300 bluegrass standards for any instrument.  Click on the products for more details.

The Matt Flinner Trio is pleased to announce the release of "Winter Harvest" on Compass Records on January 31st. Order a copy today and you could receive it on the actual release date!  Plus the physical CD copies have three bonus tracks not available on digital downloads (like from iTunes etc.).

WINTER HARVEST continues the collaborative instrumental project started by the Matt Flinner Trio in 2006 that led to their debut CD, Music du Jour. All of the tunes were written on the road, often while riding in a car, sitting in a dressing room or hotel room, or wherever was convenient at the time; and all the tunes were started, completed and performed in the same day as part of the trio's ongoing "Music du Jour" project.

Drawing from their individual diverse and vast performance histories, the Trio – Matt Flinner, Ross Martin and Eric Thorin - comes together again on WINTER HARVEST as a further unified voice—part string band, part chamber group, and part jazz trio—and in the process raises the bar for acoustic instrumental music.

A few reviews are already in:

"This album is a musical experience for the ages." ---Music News Nashville

"Winter Harvest is really what good music sounds like. A perfect blend of bluegrass tone and instrumentation with the harmonic themes and complexity of jazz."---Fiddle and Creel
